If you hold the vase up the other way, the mark could also be MH. I still don't know who it is though

Isn't this very similar to the mark on the front of the British Studio Potters Marks book? Had a quick flick under W and V, but couldn't find it, but must be in there somewhere?

Looks like HM on the pot and the book.

I think the HM on the book cover is Heber Matthews but the style of this pot is not hers

That's correct except he was a Heber and not a Sheber.  

I always thought Heber was female...well,well.
