Studio vase - unusual texture - labelled 'Pots & Pieces', Watford
I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light about this pot. A Studio vase 1970's? - unusual texture - labelled 'Pots & Pieces', Watford. We think it was bought from an auction in the 80's.
The pot stands 36cm tall and is 13cm at its widest. An unusual texture, no makers mark, just a printed label, maybe of the shop that sold it. But who made it? Where and when?
Any info greatly received

Waistel Cooper used a similar technique

It looks like a retailer. Without a mark it's difficult to know which studio potter worked there back in the 70s. Have you tried lookng under the label for a mark?

Yes the label has been removed but no mark to be found! I suppose there have been many potters over the last 50 years or so that have made this shape of vase so identifying the potter is going to be tricky!NaomiM wrote:It looks like a retailer. The label is the key to dating this. No postcode and a 5 figure phone number combined with the font style suggest earlier than 70's. My guess would be early 60's, and possibly even as far back as the end of the 50's. If nothing else, it rules out anyone who started working in the 70's

STD dialling codes began to be introduced from late 1958/early 1959 but it was the best part of 20 years before everywhere in the UK was covered.
However, London became 01 in early 1959 and, although Watford had/has its own code, one would assume that due to its proximity to the capital it got its STD code around the same time or just after.
If that is correct then this pot is late 1950s at the latest.
