Julius Torino, Great Braxted Pottery Empty Julius Torino, Great Braxted Pottery

Post by r-and-f November 5th 2012, 4:05 pm

This is a mighty pot, about 33 cms tall and weighing some 4.5 kgs. It appears to have been hand-thrown in two sections in a buff stoneware, with a textured outer surface covered in a thinly-applied matt brown glaze.  Glossy tenmoku-type glaze inside.

At first sight I thought it had a vaguely Scandinavian look and feel, but then I spotted the mark of Jennifer Hayes in the book and contacted her, but she has confirmed that it isn't hers.

Any ideas or suggestions most welcome.

Found a couple with a label and mark - is this the mark you saw?
Seemed to be operating in the 80s from the village of that name. Not particularly well known or collectable, tbh.

The pottery isn't in the Yates-Owen book.

Thank you Naomi - you're amazing! No idea how you make these connections!

It looks absolutely right, but to double-check I'll need to mount a major expedition into the deepest recesses of my attic where unattractive unidentified pots get banished.

I can't find anything online about Great Braxted Pottery. Does anyone have any information?

I've not been able to find anything. Seems it was one of those hundreds or thousands of individuals who set up in a village producing pots for a while before disappearing into anonymity. We have something similar at a village called Steventon. No one knows who the potter was, and the pottery was named after the village.

It's a Great Braxted pottery mark. Essex.

I don't think there was a lot produced there, so that is probably a unique piece.
Goes very well with your very nice decor aswell Julius Torino, Great Braxted Pottery 1f44d

Hi There, I found this large Brutalist studio pottery vase today, does anyone recognise the makers mark? Sort of a figure of eight with a roof on top.

Many thanks for your time

I think it's more likely to be FB, but doesn't quite match Fred Bramham's mark.

Hi Naomi

Contacted their Parish Council to see if they can put me in touch with anyone in the village that might know.

Will let you know if I find anything out

Hi Naomi, good news. Great Braxted Parish Clark got back to me.

"Having made some enquiries, a long standing resident of the village has advised the pottery was made by Julius Torino, who live in the village, which was the village store.  His kiln and workshop were at the rear and it is still there as far as we are aware. Julius died some years ago but his son and daughter still live in the house."
