Stoneware pots and jars
Hi all. Before I get into the usual fight with my camera and computer, may I ask if anyone on here is expert on old (mostly) tip-find stoneware jars and pots and glass bottles. I hav LOTS of them and would LOVE some info. SOme of them are obvious like OLD marmite and bovril jars; but some have registration marks but no names and no clue to thei contents. Anyone care to have a go? Thank you.

Re: Stoneware pots and jars
Do you have a local group of metal detectors? We have a few who are bottle collectors (judging by what they sell at the local car boot fair), might be worth asking them.

I have been asking around but no luck yet. I thought I'd ask here just in case. Thanks Naomi. I have 3 bottles from my hometown so I know a gentleman who will have those from me.

Re: Stoneware pots and jars
I used to dig up old bottles and jars when I was in my late twenties so might be able to help.
It was a few years ago though.

Re: Stoneware pots and jars
It's the 3 little cream coloured ones at the front which are intriguing me. Cream? Honey? Ink? I have discovered that the one back left is an old GPO insulator. ha ha I thought it was a big stopper and was trying to imagine the size of the bottle!!! Some others have Lovatt & Lovatt and Doulton and Bourne.

Re: Stoneware pots and jars
The three stoneware bottles far right would be for storing ink and would be how you would buy it around 100 years ago. I think that the conical stoneware vessel is for holding ink that was being used (I remember having one that was stained in the bottom so it had been used for that purpose).
The three white bottles at the front do look as if they would have been for cream and of the ceramic pieces the one that I can't suggest what might have been in it is the one with the longish neck.

Correction: - I now think the small conical pot held "blacking" - used to polish cast iron fire grates.

Re: Stoneware pots and jars
Spot on SP. Many stoneware bottles were produced here in Derbyshire and exported by
the train-load for the printing industries. Also Ginger beer etc.
Bourne (Denby) Lovatts (Langley Mill) and Pearsons (Chesterfield) being the main ones,
but there were also little potteries in Eastwood, Belper and Shipley for example.
They must have been cheap, as they were non-returnable, and ended up in landfill!
