Anyone familiar with Harry Everington's work? And is this one of them? Seen his obituary but there's very little of his work online and nothing like this.

I had never heard of him until your post, Naomi, but he did make figurative sculpture and sometimes in clay so that part fits. Also is it a signature that someone would add?

What about emailing his son, Simon, who seems to have followed in his father's footsteps?

Seems he was a teacher and studio potter and sculptor. He had a studio pottery at Buxton until c.1990. With Rosemary Barnett, head of the Doulton School, he set up the Frink School of Figurative Sculpture in the 1996. He died in 2000.
The piece above might be part of a chess set

This is definitely a piece made by Harry Everington. It seems to be a single prototype piece, which later became part of a chess set, called the "Old Bailey" chess set depicting a Victorian court scene. The judge is the king in this set. Harry Everington only made three of these sets in 1988, which were all sold to collectors in the US. A friend of mine tracked them down and was able to acquire two of them plus the prototype set, which he apparently acquired directly from Harry Everington. One of the two sets mentioned before is now with me, pictures enclosed.

There is a description for each of the pieces and I will post this, when I have more time next week. But in the end this is a decorative chess set not really suitable for play.
