Re: Jack Russell
The background to the images of your French bowl intrigued me and now I know what it was. Can you make a guess at any of the letters of the signature?

Re: Jack Russell
The only painters that "look up" for the date with a surname ending in ess are Florence Hess and Ann Ness but....

Re: Jack Russell
An odd thing is that the framer's label appears to be earlier than 1944 but the dog watercolour might have just been put in an earlier frame.

Thanks SP I'm amazed you found that info, cheers its a great link.
I should have said it was already open at the back with just little rusty nails holding the pic and glass and frame together.
So as you say the pic was probably added later/ been a recycled frame.
Although I like the pic that little dog has massive paws.
I think its very likely someone just drew their own dog.

Re: Jack Russell
Nic pic...
I too thought it looked like GESS 44 ....
....But thinking Outside the Box....could there be a letter *T* at the start? You will notice that there is a line down at at the very beginning, then with a strike above it right at the very start. Why make a strike line on top of the other letters? Usually if a person makes a Strike line -- it is Underneath the letters.
So just throwing this out there ???? Is that the letter *T*
~ T. GESS
....or could there be more letters at the beginning such as; (??)
~ TAGESS ??
~ TEGESS??
~ THAGESS??
~ LAGESS
~ T.LAGESS
I do not know at all.....if just seems like there is that strike on top of the letters at the beginning that could be a T....
Maybe I am seeing more...but just throwing *that thought* out there about the strike at the start, above all the letters at the start...

Re: Jack Russell
Thanks Antiquerose : ), what you suggest makes perfect sense.. It could well be a T, as you say why have a line above?
Only problem I cant find an artist listed gess.
I'll check out your suggestions though..
It may be as DD suggest, being the little mutts name.
I now think it must be a hobby painter.

Just throwing ideas around!
Do I detect some light-hearted japing DD?
Maybe a 44 yr old dog called Bess.
I must say I think people are being too kind, Zippy. You are lovely but this must be one of the worst dog paintings ever.

Re: Jack Russell
No really Zip I was being serious, why not 1844? If you have already established the
framing materials are earlier than 1944.
framing materials are earlier than 1944.
Re: Jack Russell
1844 would have been too early for the framers, who in various guises were in business from 1885 until 1927. The address on the label dates to 1903 -08.
So we know that the frame is 20th century and made in Victoria Street, Westminster between 1903 and 1908 so............. let's forget about the dog!

Re: Jack Russell
I said forget about the dog.
The paper the dog is painted on doesn't look 19th century to me.
