Stoneware bottle vase - Mexican, Jorge Wilmot
I try not to buy unmarked pots but couldn't stop myself with this one. It is 8" tall and heavily potted in stoneware. In fact the potting is a bit rough and the proportions aren't perfect, but the glazing and decoration are superb, with flowers on one side and a fabulous long-tailed black bird on the other. I've dismissed the idea of a hobby potter but don't have any other bright suggestions - unless it could possibly be Japanese? Can anyone help, please?

Naomi probably knows better than I but might they be Mexican? The glazes kind of look Japanese but the decoration does not.

Yup, Mexican. I have one with the same flower decoration, signed MEX on the base.

Thanks S-P and Naomi. I'm sure you're right and would never have thought of Mexico by myself!

I think that I have seen the like in the past but it's only being on the Forum that has made me think that.

A bit of googling on Mexican stoneware has turned up the unlikely name of Ken Edwards, of Tonala Municipality, Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Jalisco State.
The glaze and decoration on my bottle vase look just right for him.
Thanks again.

Ken Edwards is very likely. The other possibility is Jorge Wilmot, but he tends to sign pieces with a W.

Thanks yet again Naomi. Now I think that Jorge Wilmot is a closer match than Ken Edwards.
How I wish that potters would sign all their pots!
