Possibly Herculaneum (Liverpool) or Staffordshire vases?
Hi,
This is my first ever post on this site so please be gentle with me!
A few months ago I acquired 2 vases (pictured) at a car boot sale which I guess at one time must have been part of a garniture, but now only consist of a large (approx 26cms high) and a smaller (23cms ) pair of vases.
They are in porcelain/bone china and to my inexpert eye are very finely hand-painted and gilded.
However, they really have been in the wars and appear to have been damaged several times and repaired (rather badly!) ,but are still handsome IMHO.
This brings me to the point of posting; I really have no idea who made them.
Going purely by their decorative style (of the winged figures) and the power of the internet I thought that they might possibly be Herculaneum Pottery Liverpool?
The only marks on each are the numbers 115 and a squiggle (unreadable) on each.
Can anyone suggest who might have made them?
I love them for their decorative value alone but it really would make my day if I were able to identify them?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

What a wonderful find. Someone on here may know.
I don't know Herculaneum Pottery; you could ask The Potteries Museum in Staffordshire. My first thought, though, was Swansea or Nantgarw porcelain. You could ask the National Museum of Wales, or, if it's still open, Nantgarw Chinaworks Museum

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!
Will certainly check the links out!
I have to admit that I absolutely love these vases, despite their extensive damage!
When I bought these in October I also bought a pair of Bloor Derby vases (also rather battered!) from the same seller but as these are clearly marked there is no mystery as to their origins.....
Purely by chance I encountered the same seller at the same car boot about 2 weeks ago (when I purchased a very nice little Meiji period Satsuma bowl from him) and elicited the info that he buys job lots at auctions and sells on the stuff he doesn't need....tbh it's mainly damaged in some way....so these vases have obviously been perused by expert eyes in the recent past.
Commercially speaking I'm sure these vases aren't worth much but that's immaterial to me; the painting is fantastic quality IMHO.
Can you tell I really like them?

Well they say buy what you like. I don't mind a bit of damage either if I love the look of a pot. :)

Welsh was my first thought as well but I wouldn't rule out some of the English factories, possibly Coalport.

I think these vases are also Derby. I found the same shape in a Batemans sale...
....oh, hang on, several auction results with same shape but different decoration, and different makers. Search for caryatid handled vases

Re: Possibly Herculaneum (Liverpool) or Staffordshire vases?
Send them an email asking about their attribution as the ones they have listed don't have any makers marks either. However on one of their photos the number is much clearer and appears to be 2 over 115. I know Coalport used this system of numbering and it would date the vases to ca.1820, I'm afraid I don't know about Derby's numbering system so I'm not saying that they aren't. Another option is sending an email to the V&A museum ceramics and glass department, they are always willing to help id items. Whoever made them they are stunning even if damaged and a great find.

Re: Possibly Herculaneum (Liverpool) or Staffordshire vases?
Well, all I can say is a massive thanks to all of you .
Having searched using that suggested term I indeed also came up with the same Bamfords and Bateman's results.
TBH knowing that they are either Derby or Coalport has satisfied my hunger for knowledge , and I no longer think mine are in such terrible condition having seen some of the (IMO) awful gilding on some of those auctioned vases......
Think mine at a tenner the pair were a good find......
Thanks again everybody!
