batik? Empty batik?

Post by LucyW March 26th 2015, 1:50 am

I found this really interesting batik type item. It seems to depict a warrior on a horse. It's heavily beaded and has green cloth stitched onto it, I can only guess for protecting the edges? Its so lovely and must have taken ages to make, although it's only small really, about the size of an album cover (oh cushion cover maybe)
Any information on where it is from would be gratefully received.batik? Imag0815batik? Imag0816batik? Imag0817

It's gorgeous. Looks like stump work. The theme looks Persian. With the metal bead work it might be from the Iran/Iraq/Pakistan area.

it really is beautiful but it has been through the mill a bit. It's very musty, any ideas how to clean something like this? I'm thinking maybe just brush it with a soft brush?
Is it usual for this type of thing to have the material that is tacked on around the back and edges. I'm wondering if I should remove it?

I would contact a museum dealing in fabrics and ask how best to clean it. It could be very old.

Thanks, I've emailed a museum and sent some pictures so fingers crossed they might be able to help out. Somehow I don't think spraying it with febreeze would be the best way to go, but that was the hubbys suggestion!!

batik? Empty Burmese Kalaga

Post by finders9 September 4th 2018, 11:34 pm

Hi - just came across your posting - can't really see the photo that well but think your textile is from Burma (Myanmar) - called a Kalaga - I have seen quite a few of these and they range from new tourist textiles to authentic ethnic art. https://www.culturalpatina.com/products/tapestry-extra-large-burmese-kalaga-textile-mid-1900s-932

Sorry it took me so long - just have time to check the forum from time to time.
