A porcelain bottle with brushwork - post Leach Pottery.

A tall stoneware bottle 43 cm (17 inches) high.

There is an argument as to who was best of the Leach school of potters. Freed from the stylistic shackles of Leach Pottery, Bill Marshall takes some beating.

There will always be an argument, as there is no definitive answer, but for what it is worth, for me, Bill was the finest potter that worked at the Leach Pottery. Not only did he make very fine work of his own there and afterwards but a number of Bernard Leach's best pots too.

Here's the same dish with a couple of cut and shaped porcelain bottles made in Lelant after he retired from the Leach Pottery.

Three more pieces of Bill's work that I have sold recently. The jar is the biggest piece of his work that I recall seeing and is 44 cm (17.3 inches) tall.

Ed once said that William Marshall never incised his mark but I’m seeing a number at the auction houses with an incised MW and date on the base

I have on occasions had pieces of Bill's work with an incised mark (maybe when he had lost his seal?) but I don't recall seeing a date. However, that doesn't mean he didn't.

Talking about an incised mark. This one was made at a Potter's Camp. Hence the incised date and mark. 40 cms in diameter

Now here is a rare one. On Ebay on 10/7/21. A Bill Marshall St Ives Ash Tray in what looks like Salt glaze. It has both Bill Marshall and St Ives marks on it.

Here's a teabowl with brushwork that I sold recently.

A friend (it was Deirdre Burnett, the potter) sent me this imagine yesterday of a yunomi that she had bought from the Leach Pottery in 1965/6 because she liked it. She also sent me an image of the seals but that was blurred and so I won't include it, as she wanted me to identify the potter.

I think without his personal seal alongside the Leach Pottery seal, I would have been certain that it was one of Bill's.

The hakeme glaze and the iron brushwork, inspired by Hamada, are very pleasing to me.

My interest is the Leach pottery in St Ives which is my favourite part of the country.

Encouraged I’ve posted my favourite pieces but my collection is nothing like some of you guys who have been enthusiasts for years.

Nice peices. The jug looks as though it might be from the 'modern' version of the Leach Pottery, The bottom portion looks as though it is unglazed, is that right? The old version of the St Ives pottery would rarely have left an unglazed part of a jug like that.
The yunomi looks very nice! Has it got Bill Marshall's XXX mark (which comes in a number of slightly different versions) on it?
