Any ideas...old/new...Egg Cup?...Dickens character ?
It looks a bit large for an egg-cup...is he a Dickens Character?
It is impressed England to the base with brown/black stamp...2 words i think..2nd ENGLAND..1st has the letters NG in the middle

Looks like a Crown Ducal or a similar stamp from around the 1st World war. But as for what it is, I think it is a tobacco Jar that is missing its top. Would have probably had a top shaped like a cap. Not an uncommon thing to find although most from this period come from Austria and are unmarked. Google Tobacco jars to see examples.

I think its deffo Lingard...thanks Bisto. And also Mr.Pickwick ! Also Mordeep i shall check out Tobacco Jars...i would guess a bit small

yes, i went a while ago - it's the last day today so if anyone still hasn't seen it, better get down there quick! I've been looking at the Watts Gallery website and there's an exhibition of Richard Dadd's fairy paintings starting next week so i may have to drive up the A3 to take a look.

yes, not the easiest location. I think Haslemere or Guildford would be the nearest train stations? But then an expensive taxi journey or bus ride to Compton afterwards. But it is a very lovely gallery and the chapel is fantastic; not to mention the great pieces of Compton pottery.
