Gone Mental
Is it me or is it the ex-potter, who has gone barking mad?

No-one in their right mind is going to pay over £600 for one of these bowls so who is going to pay 100 times that for 96 very similar looking bowls?
I suppose the hope is that a museum squanders money on the tosh.

Re: Gone Mental
Perhaps they need to try that Four Rooms show. Meeth inks they would offer £500 for the lot.
Re: Gone Mental
Phil Rogers did a very nice 80 yunomi display which was bought by a couple for their aniversary, and I think it worked out at £60 a bowl?? And they were different colours sizes and decoration, But this is just crazy. And what's worse was hearing someone say that there were few potters who could make that many pots the same. I told him there were plenty of potters making standard ware who could knock out hundreds, if not thousands, in a week. It's nothing special.

Rupert Spira was/is a mediocre to average potter despite the uneducated nonsense that has been written about him in the media recently.

To be fair I think his pots are of great quality, but the are basic and more like standard ware than "art" in my opinion.

Re: Gone Mental
We'll have to disagree of the quality of Mr. S's potting but I should perhaps be "bigging him up" as I have four of his Cardewesque bowls on SOR that I'll be showing at my open weekend at the end of July.
I do agree that it's not art but I suppose his thinking is that if the plagiarist, Edmund de Waal, can pass this type of nonsense off as art then why not plagiarise the plagiarist.

Re: Gone Mental
I like a lot of his Teabowls but they sell for around £50 on eBay
He hasn't had much, if any, media exposure like De Waal so I don't see how he's going to get that price, tbh it looks like a stunt; knocking de Waal.

He used to get quite alot of exposure when he was potting and this exhibition at Oxford gained widespread publicity but he has moved on to greater things

Re: Gone Mental
Given what passes for contemporary art nowadays, anything is possible. With the right combination of mysticism, chutzpah, snobbishness and marketing, you can sell almost anything as 'Art' to the utra rich who have a gargantuan amount of money but no sense or taste whatever. F

Re: Gone Mental
I don't mind someone with more money than sense buying it but I wouldn't be best pleased if it were bought by a UK Museum with the help of public funds.
