Jug with a face
This jug is 6.5 inches tall and has a lovely honey-coloured glaze. The spout is decorated with a rather cheeky sgraffito face, with a sketchy house and a tree below. I thought about country potteries in Devon or Cornwall, or maybe Farnham, but the light-coloured clay and the finish on the base don't look right. So could it be French? I dunno. Can anyone help, please?
Re: Jug with a face
I was going to say Mary Wandrausch but I think it's the wrong clay.

Could the base colour be a thin layer of restoration? Surely the sgraffito effect indicates that the body of the jug is basically red clay.

Thanks for your comments.
The clay is light coloured, unglazed and plain as in the photo. There seem to be two layers of slip on the body of the jug - brown underneath with a light tan over, so that the sgraffito cuts through the lighter layer to reveal the darker. Then the whole thing has been covered with a glossy transparent glaze, but leaving the base bare.

Hi R and F
Not sure it is English. The light clay normally rules out the Devon / Cornwall potters who used mostly the abundant red clay found in the area. That and although the face throws me a bit, the little house I have seem before. It was on the side of some Italian ceramics from the 1930's. Of course they could be copying someone's design but I think it is more than possible it's from that part of the world.

Yes, I think you're right. Continental. The shape is wrong for the UK.

Looks to me a little like a Trullo house in Apulia, Italy.
