Slightly saucy tankard - Stephen Dixon
Hi
Hoping someone can shed some light on this tankard.
Marked 'Made Exclusively for the Royal Academy of Arts by Stephen Dixon'. Not sure what the body is ? stoneware . Moulded design , which appears slightly saucy (IMO ) but have included an ' innocent' image Handle is formed as a dragon
I've searched but unable to find anything at the moment . There is a seriously good potter by the same name - Ceramacist in residence at V&A 2009-10 but sure it's nothing to do with him as his work bears absolutely no resemblance

Yes, but unfortunately images of his work show not the remotest hint that he may have produced this !!

Re: Slightly saucy tankard - Stephen Dixon
I disagree. Several Medieval-style pieces by him on google images. The tankard is a production piece but the figural decoration is in a similar style to those on his individual pieces.

Re: Slightly saucy tankard - Stephen Dixon
I contacted Stephen Dixon to see if there was any further info. He is now a Professor at the Crafts Research Centre, Manchester School of Art .
He very kindly responded
'........yes its one of mine, made soon after I graduated from the RCA in 1986. It was a commission from the Royal Academy for their 'Age of Chivalry' exhibition, a limited edition of 200 as I remember. I still have two of my own. Its a beer tankard, inspired by a medieval misericord image of ale-wives condemned to hell for serving bad beer! ......'
So not 'cheeky' after all

Stephen Dixon watering can
Help! Major Mystery Score today in the MPLS MN area. Watering can with a Beauty & the Beast theme. So many wonderful things going on with this piece -- apparently unsigned (inconceivable!?!), unless the large low relief wax seal looking mark is actually a chop, but it feels decorative to me. 18.5" x 12.5" x 10"

Re: Slightly saucy tankard - Stephen Dixon
Definitely his work. Doesn't really need a mark, but I think the unicorn and lion cartouche maybe one of his marks.

.. and it is in fact given as his mark in BSPM, described as a "spoof coat-of-arms" in use from 1985. The drawing in the book makes it clear that the lion and unicorn are supporting a carrot, rather than a shield.
