Pottery desk tidy pen tray/holder? Unmarked

I've had this piece stored away for sometime, it has no makers mark, nice vibrant orange glaze. any suggestions welcome.

Not sure it is a desk tidy. My guess would be something much more functional along the lines of a chips and dips tray or an olive and bruschetta tray. Similar examples can be found in many Mediterranean household shops, so I would say made for food use rather than display.
