Even if you can't see any marks lots can be told by seeing close up photos of the base and all of the items you describe. It helps work out what clay was used, how it was made and that all points towards its origins. If you can supply those it could make the difference.

I am beginning to think this might be a wild goose chase. My mother did fine art pottery at Birmingham Art School in the 1940's and I think they may hers, though she generally inscribed her name and the date on the base of her pieces.

Not really a wild goose chase, as they look right for being made at an Art School back then. So to finish the job you'll need to give her name.
