It is porcelain and I suspect a glaze test. Antimony oxide is an opacifier in low fire glazes and porcelain enamels. It would have been responsible for the yellow colour but isn't very stable at high temperatures and so is not used widely.

Next time you are at one of the big ceramic events ask all the potters that use porcelain to spell Antimony and see which ones use E instead of I. Simple
