Re: Stoneware Jug, unmarked - Jelfs?
I'm not an expert on glaze names but it is definitely rich in iron and I would plump for it being a kaki glaze.
Found a recipe for you at http://glazy.org/recipes/2976 so it looks as if I was correct.
The first name that came to mind was the potter, John Jelfs. It's a guess but a possibility and if you felt brave you could try contacting him.

He He, I've had this jug in my hands a few times, was tempted, but unmarked so...
Re: Stoneware Jug, unmarked - Jelfs?
I have a very similar jug by John Jelfs which also is not marked

Funnily enough Jelfs was my first thought too.

Re: Stoneware Jug, unmarked - Jelfs?
Thanks SP for the info on the glaze..it's really stunning.
Now I've looked at John Jelfs work I can see why he's everyones first thought. I don't know if it's one that didn't turn out perfect and that's why he didn't mark it, or he just doesn't mark some pots...I know some potters feel their work should be, and often is, recognised without the need to sign, but if you're lacking in experience (like me) and knowledge (like me) you have to ask...Thanks everyone.
I might contact John Jelfs and politely enquire...
DD, I think we need to talk territories! (just kidding)

Another possibility is Jack Kenny

Re: Stoneware Jug, unmarked - Jelfs?
Thanks Naomi, looking at his work Jack Kenny seems very likely, especially with his chemistry background and the gorgeous glaze. However I'm having trouble finding any contact details to ask him directly, so I've emailed Oakwood Gallery (Mansfield) to see if they can help. I noticed his work on another website (am I allowed to say which?) and almost emailed SP for help! then I realised who it was, thought he might have chuckled at that. Anyway I'll let you know if the gallery replies.

Jack seems to have disappeared but it doesn't look like any of his work that I'm familiar with.
I suspect that you might have got away with mentioning the other gallery that you almost contacted. However, mentioning David Binch's Oakwood Gallery is strictly forbidden.

Re: Stoneware Jug, unmarked - Jelfs?
Apologies SP...did get some great info on Jack Kenny from http://www.studio-pots.com/JackKenny.htm
However, David Binch supplied an email address for Jack Kenny. He wasn't sure it was valid, but I tried and Jack Kenny replied. He was very helpful and confirmed it wasn't his work...at least we're sure now.
I have also emailed John Jelfs, just waiting to see if I get a reply.
Just got a reply from Jude Jelfs...it's not one of John's.
