Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
Thanks for the info Very helpful to know, these are stamped with the Ulrome Shield, which I understand has often washed off long ago, so I guess we are lucky. At the moment, I am in two minds whether to keep them or sell them, as I didn't know what they were until someone said they were a collectors item the other day. We tried taking them to the Hornsea Museum to find out more today but it is closed until Easter.

Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
We went to the Hornsea Museum the other day and it is well worth a visit for the pottery collection alone. It is really well laid out to show the development of the pottery, and some of the designers too

Any idea please on the pattern and designer for this Hornsea bowl? Backstamp dates to 1956-62 but I can't trace this pattern, impressed no. 603. Any thoughts welcome John

Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
The pattern is called "Tricorn", it was produced on a wide range of shapes and it dates from 1958.
I'm going to see if I can find out who is the designer.

Sorry
You are correct about John Clappison. I'm actually a big fan of Hornsea. Bought this horribly ugly (according to everyone else I know, lol) little spice jar years ago and have been a fan ever since.

Theres a blurb in the info about him designing that early in his career.

Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
I suspect it's British, probably a factory such as Midwinter/Hornsea etc, but we do (and always) need a base picture please.

There you go. My first thought was Hornsea, but it's not a design I've seen before and I'm quite familiar with that stuff. Doesn't look like Midwinter to me.

Oh - just noticed one of my little Hornsea mushrooms has a dark brown stopper just like one of these has.

Any impressed marks on the salt/pepper?

They were probably bought in from a supplier who also supplied other factory's, but this may help the idea of it being British.

Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
No marks at all. The Hornsea mushroom cruets were also always unmarked, though. The green does seem very close to the lime green on the Gaiety range. I don't know if you can tell from the photo, but the design is incised.

Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
Having looked up some others by Hornsea, personally I'm at least 75% confidant that they are Hornsea. (Though will probably find out I'm wrong )
Reasons being:
The size and number of the holes are exactly the same as some on ebay (1 large hole for salt, 3 fine holes for pepper, also the way they have been molded sharply), the ebay ones are a different shape by the way.
The clay looks to be the right colour and hardness.
The molding looks right, including the "incised" parts.
The way the bases are molded.
The glaze tones seem to fit too.

Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
It's not Midwinter but Hornsea seems a good shout to me, although I don't regard myself as knowing much about Hornsea.

Brilliant! Thanks. Is it a Clappison design?

Re: Hornsea Pottery (E Yorks & Lancaster)
There are some designs that are attributed to John but there were also other designers
Most designs were a committee decsion to make so the intial design could be from any of the designers
JC was there from 1958 to 1972 in his first stint doing tableware so it could well be but who knows

Someone else might know the designer but they are clased as multicouloured slip ware vases (4 in the series) 1961
Produced for a very short time only and quite hard to find nowadays
