Colin Melbourne Elephant and Cat lookalikes ?
Any ideas as to maker of these black matt finish animals.
Reminiscent of Colin Melbourne but not quite.
Cat has impressed 176.
Many thanks.

Re: Colin Melbourne Elephant and Cat lookalikes ?
Came across a black cat recently, attributed to Midwinter, designed by Colin Melbourne. Different style from this one

There is no recorded black Midwinter cat.
I would look at Beswick and Trentham.
Failing that, Melba and Coopercraft.

Are they definitely produced in Britain? Is the white label on the cat's underside the remains of a price tag or pottery label.
The cat's face is a bit creepy if you ask me.

One of those cats was sold on an online auction site last month - it went for 95 quid - and was advertised as being Midwinter.

"This is a very stylish and good quality unmarked Midwinter pottery stylised large reclining cat figure designed by Colin Melbourne and dating to the mid fifties. These figures are hard to find and not made for very long. This piece is completely unmarked but is guaranteed to be a Midwinter piece, not to be confused with Hornsea!"
quoth the seller.

No, not Hornsea either.
Well, a new one on me if it is, I wonder where the Midwinter attribution came from?
It's not on the factory pattern sheet for the Melbourne animals.

The same seller had this cat - also billed as an unmarked Midwinter piece - a short while go...

Hi and thanks for all your suggestions. Sorry for late response but I was away.
It does seem to be very similar to Melbourne Midwinter pieces but don't think I would be too happy guaranteeing it as such.
Any further info much appreciated.
