I bought this old plate years ago and tried to do some research. I think it is tin glazed. I can see 3 marks around the rim which are original and I think where the plate was stacked before firing?

There is a very old crack across the plate and I assume someone at an earlier date stuck it back together. The plate is irregular and obviously not mass produced.

Any help re. type of pottery, origin, age etc. much appreciated. Thanks again, never disappointed by responses.ID & Age help please 18th/19th? c. Tulip Delftware? Plate 32x4 cm Dscn0112

I have a similar one. I think it's Spanish? A traditional form which were still being made in the 20thC so difficult to date, but likely to at least be 19thC if not earlier

I would be amazed if that pattern is earlier than mid 20th c but then I'm often amazed these days

Sorry to say I don't think it is 19th century or earlier. It's just to neat and even to be completely hand thrown, I think it was made in a mold.

The three marks you see around the rim are not from firing or stacking and are pretty common. They can be found on plates that someone has hung on the wall with those wire hanging frames popular last century. The marks are from the hooks those frames have that come over the lip.

The design is pretty rustic and could come from any place between Denmark and Spain I can't see anything that would point to one country. So I am going to guess closer to Denmark only because tin plate Delft was more popular there than Spanish version.

I am going to suggest the start of the 20th century. 1900-1930 with the 20's being most likely because if it was earlier it would probably have a stencil image of a castle or something on it or it would be painted blue and white as was the fashion around 1900.

Keep them coming Clare. We are always happy to see different things.

One tip for you in your hunting is to try and remember two things.

Most old ceramics are painted with things people had around them or are complete fantasy constructs. So you get the flowers or the church the painter noticed on his or her way to work everyday or they are mad invented creatures that have never lived like Gargoyles. It helps work out the origin of something.

The other tip kindly came from a very sweet lady who is an expert in very old European pottery. I was lucky enough to see and handle a lot of items made in the 17th and 18th century (1600-1799). Apart from the very highest factory items made for the rich. It all looked very washed out. Like it had been faded in the sun. It turns out that the range of colours available to makers narrows the further you go back and the more limited the range of those colours and paler the effect the older it is suggested to be.

Of course once you step outside Europe all bets are off and you can be blown away by the colours on a thousand year old items.

But it is a good thing to keep in mind Excellent
