I have never seen a salt glazed piece with a base like that?

It's not possible to salt glaze precisely so it isn't salt-glazed. What I mean is that you can't have regular unglazed areas after firing if salt had been added to the kiln.

Naomi - the inside and base look very clean, not a mark on that tail which looks fragile. I also think he is a water dropper/brush pot. That black lining has been done with some alacrity.
