I think the damage to the base was caused during firing. A professional potter would probably have consigned such a piece to the sherd pile so I suspect it's a student piece. Or it could be a test piece - the top part looks quite nicely glazed. But I can't tell if it's thinly potted (sign of a professional) or bottom heavy, (indicating a student piece)

It's more to do with evenness of the thickness of the walls. Students often misjudge the thickness of the base so it's much thicker than the walls of the top half of the pot, leaving the pot bottom heavy. That may be why they've carved the foot, and why the base has cracked during firing.
