Hi, I could use some help with this Lion. It is a great pose and seems well modelled and all in proportion (a  lot aren't) 10" x 14". Has the number 140 or 740. Sadly it is damaged to one side of the face but still displays really well from the good side. ThanksChalkware / plaster Lion Image17

Looks like it's made of quality form of plaster of Paris. Pattern Number 140. Possibly from the 1920s-30s when such pieces were sold at fairs and shows. Termed 'chalkware' in the US. I have a number of plaster bookends from that time. Other than that I could say. I don't know if anyone has researched who made them. This might be from a zoo.

Hi, the base is solid and the lion itself seems  hollow somehow?   It is all chalk/plaster so I should be able to sort the damage. I do think it has a great look to it and for a 'chalkware' piece it is very nicely done. My wife is definitely of the other opinion :-) Thanks NaomiM
