Reinhold Merkelbach
This is a lovely stein. Can you ID it for me please. It has the Star of David to base and what may be RM but first letter is obscure. There is also a J, a number 758 and a little triangle. Thank you in advance." />

Reinhold Merkelbach Beer Stein ID
I believe I have an Reinhold Merkelbach beer stein, but am not certain. The bottom is marked with "RM" inside a star of David, has the number 18 and the letter M stamped on the bottom. Would anyone know anything about this stein? Thanks.

Reinhold Merkelbach 12" Plate
Dear Members,
Does anyone know anything about this studio (Reinhold Merkelbach)? I believe this plate is earthenware/stoneware with some sort of heavy glazing. The plate itself is 12" and is very heavy indeed for its size, far heavier than you'd expect when looking at it. I think from what I've found the company specialised/specialises in Steins, I cant find much about anything else they've done. Would you consider this a 'quality' piece? And can you confirm the materials in use here, so I can accurately describe it. And what might the numbers under the makers mark signify?
Thanks as always!
Paul.

Re: Reinhold Merkelbach
Yes, stoneware. Numbers and lettering like these are usually shape and pattern numbers and the decorators initials (they would have been paid per piece. As for the company itself, I only know what you know via Google. It may have been made as a plate for carrying steins on

Awesome, thanks. I've done a bit more digging this morning too, and you're right about the numbers. 712 is the mold number, 1 is the design number (as the mold featured a number of different designs) and I guess C L is the decorator/artist. Most likely due to the mark this is post 1936. The vast majority of their catalogue is stein related, so like you say this could have been used to carry a few stein's around, although it might have been made simply for display - apparently they did a few things such as music boxes as well.
I think they are considered 'westerwald' - and as such are considered of fairly high quality. Apparently the decoration is hand cut, and its also hand painted.

Re: Reinhold Merkelbach
I collect Westerwald and can confirm it's a good example with no colour bleeding. The subject matter is also uncommon but the naive style may not appeal to most collectors

Great news, thanks for letting me know. I guess like fashion, certain trends come and go; so hopefully one day it'll be considered more collectable.

Re: Reinhold Merkelbach
BTW, back in the day these were available to buy new from the manufacturer, what sort of price would someone had to have paid?
Thanks

Re: Reinhold Merkelbach
I would see them in tourist shops back in the late 1970's for £10 - £15
