Old baccy jar? Empty Old baccy jar?

I'm guessing that this may be an old tobacco jar, or maybe a kitchen storage jar. A bit battered but I rather like it. Grey clay, 11cm tall. The impressed mark, which is a little unclear, is located just above the footrim and looks a little like a B quartered with a cross or, if you prefer, a smiling cartoon ghost.
