photos of Potters - Leach, Cardew etc
Hi
I bought a number of photos some time ago featuring rural crafts etc . Included were these 4 images of potters and am wondering if anyone on here can identify them. A VERY long shot I know.
They were taken in 1948 and some of the other images are definitely from Sussex or the South . There were also topographical images - all in Sussex.
From info on the reverse of the photos they appear to have come from a museum? photographic collection ? as they have reference numbers and at some point came from Barnaby's Picture Library or The Mustograph Agency in London

Re: photos of Potters - Leach, Cardew etc
It's a youngish Bernard decorating the Z bowl and some of the others look familiar. I'll think.

Top left could be Bill Marshall, who would have been in his mid-twenties at that time. Can't be certain as he was somewhat older when I first met him!

Off topic, but the first two could almost be Jan & Feb from a naked potters calendar

Great - I was hoping it might be St Ives / Leach . I did wonder re the design on the bowl being a clue.

Pre-War Bernard Leach had a strong connection with the artistic community at Ditchling. Staying there quite often. He was a visiting lecturer at Brighton college apparently, in 1936.

Bernard Leach looks much younger here than he did in 1950:

Re: photos of Potters - Leach, Cardew etc
If they were all taken in 1948 then Bernard would have been 60 and, although I'm certain the photograph is Bernard I did think he looked younger than I would have expected him to. Maybe some images were earlier or Bernard had tarted himself up, as he knew the photographer was coming.

Re: photos of Potters - Leach, Cardew etc
Yes, I saw both those images.
So unless the date on the reverse of the photo is wrong
If the date IS wrong then this must be the earliest image of him that can be found. I agree that it does look like him - hairline/ the deep lines down towards his chin
Are there any images in any of his books?

The Z bowls really tell us that it's post WWII.

Could 3 be Michael Leach? He would have been 35 in 1948.

Re: photos of Potters - Leach, Cardew etc
It seems Michael Cardew left St. Ives in 1926? Maybe the photographer took the photos in other potteries in the area ie Greet (Winchcombe).
I did contact St Ives re photos but unfortunately no response
