Mitzi Solomon Cunliffe for Royal Lancastrian
Hi All. I recently found this bowl in a local auction that I think is one of the items designed by Mitzi Solomon Cunliffe between the late 1940's early 1950's for Royal Lancastrian. Asymmetrical it measures 25 cm x 27 cm & between 6 & 9 cm (lowest height to maximum height) and weighs a whopping 1.2 kgs. There is no pattern or mold number on the underside just the marks ROYAL LANCASTRIAN MADE IN ENGLAND and P inside a Rose. From what I have been able to find so far it does seem to conform to her designs - asymmetrical, white rim, coloured interior and a matt black exterior. If anyone could confirm it would be greatly appreciated (it may prove to be one of my best bargain buys ever). Many thanks - help appreciated

Yes it looks right. There are several variations of the basic shape and size, and
also several colours.

I'm not sure that she did any other designs for them.
She also designed textiles (for David Whitehead).

Re: Mitzi Solomon Cunliffe for Royal Lancastrian
As the name suggests, she was American by birth and originally studied there before moving to Paris. However, she met her future husband, who was a British academic, in 1949 and this resulted in her settling in England.
I believe DD is correct and by profession she was really an architectural sculptor. However, perhaps her most famous design, although not for Pilkington's, is the BAFTA award (the mask statuette).
She died in 2006.

Multi-talented as you say. After much searching (you seem to best results if you google Mitzi Cunliffe Royal Lancastrian) I can see she designed a number of items for Royal Lancastrian, all in a very modernist style. I actually had one of the others (an asymmetrical sectioned bowl) some years ago but it was very badly damaged and I let it go. Anyway now added to my ever growing collection of glass and ceramics for which I never have enough space to display.

There is a variant on the bowls I had many years ago, with a sgraffito white horse
inside the bowl, carved through the colour. Not sure if it was her actual design though.

Weird coincidence: I'd never heard of Mitzi Cunliffe until seeing this posting yesterday, but went to an auction viewing today and saw this:

There are a couple of great Lancastrian books available that will give you all the detail you could want. The most recent one by the society is a must have for those interested in the company.
