Earthenware jug; Willelm - Desmant
Attracted to this as its a bit of a strange one! 12cm high. Earthenware . ? German
?Transfer printed or hand painted under a high glaze with areas of lustre, the beige areas around the figures appear to be crackled but very evenly .
Front has a ? medieval figure and the letters WILLELM and reverse has a bird.
Incised signature on base which appears to have a little age as does the interior .
Could this be a fairly recent copy of something more ancient or from the potters imagination?
Thanks

Pretty sure it's a French pottery Bayeux tapestry lustre jug by Desmant circa 1910. The images are take from the tapestry.

Thanks for that Johners. I' m pleased that the inkling I had that there was something interesting lurking under the thick layer of muck has proved correct. Not a waste of 50p after all!

Bargain and quite collectable I would have thought.
