Bowl with hunter and hounds
Hello everyone I'm John yet another pot freak.
I bought this pot 35 years ago from a market bric a brac stall anyone seen anything like it before.
I cant see any signs of it being molded....it appears to be a light clay body thats been painted/stained.
It decoration appears to be add ons but would be very time consuming unless its an overall banded relief pattern but the pots appears to be the same thickness overall.
The pattern is One man with possible a bow followed by 1 dog then 1 man and 3 dogs followed by 1 man and 4 dogs then 2 men and 3 dogs..
I cant work out how its was made...
Any help would be appreciated....Thanks ....

we prefer that you use the bottom option as it fits on smaller screens but well done sorting out the pics anyway

Re: Bowl with hunter and hounds
Thanks for the museum tip Naomi.....I Googled lots of different cultures art work depicting dogs and man .... the main ones seem to be Greek or Egyptian both having the triangular body shapes and Jackal headed dogs.... John

Re: Bowl with hunter and hounds
Not sure I can give you a firm attribute. In style it is like ancient Mesopotamia or Greek drawings of people, in particular the bull dancers of Knossos ( look it up). But it is clearly not a 1700 year old bit of pottery. I would think it a more modern tourist item and following that logic the more tourists a country has the more chance it was made at that time. The med and the near east have had tourists since about 1800 peaking in the 1960's/1970's before the troubles flared up in certain countries heavily reducing visitors. The chances are then it was made in the 1960-70's in a near east county like Syria/Iraq/Iran as a version of an ancient wine cup. It could be earlier but the chances reduced the further back you go.

Re: Bowl with hunter and hounds
One thing to add is that looks an awful lot like a stoat on the cup next to the dogs and hunters. It could be a long shot but they used to be a sacred animal in the ancient near east religions. Could be a further link to that part of the world.
