Re: Graeme James
Beautiful form. Not finding it in the Marks book. Looks Scandinavian but might be from further afield such as the US or AU

Re: Graeme James
That's what I thought until I asked the chap selling it to send me a picture of the mark.
I still bought it though as I love the shape and the glazes.
(I have the chaps written permission to use his images on here)

Re: Graeme James
Not finding it in the US or Australian Marks sites so I think Continental is more likely unless your friend is based in either of those countries.

Re: Graeme James
I have asked the chap I bought it from were it may have come from. He told me it was his parents vase and that they bought it in the C80s. He said that at that time they would not have travelled far from home (age) so he thinks that the Southwest is likely. He said it knows it's not from a Welsh pottery.

Re: Graeme James
Might be worth asking Geoffrey Swindell. He may have come across the mark before if people have mistakem similar pieces as his.

I have emailed him. I guess that just because it was bought in the UK doesn't mean it was made there.

Re: Graeme James
I think so. It's quite large at 17.5 cm.

Re: Graeme James
Geoffrey Swindell says he thinks it's most likely Ray Silverman!

Re: Graeme James
This is the full reply I got from Geoff:
Hi Dan
The pot was most likely to have been made by Ray Silverman. He is easily found on the net and friendly enough so you could contact him to confirm. I have found three marks for him, none of them like your pot, but I think if he has changed his mark three times he may have done more. In 1980 I was on a Gig in Vienna doing several demos during the course of a weeks World craft council conference. Having turned up at every one, studying very thoroughly every thing I do to create my work on the wheel, I was amazed to find that he started to make accurate copies during the 1980s!
Let me know if I am right.
Cheers
Geoff

Re: Graeme James
That's great :) The Marks book only lists one mark for him so more to find :)

Re: Graeme James
The seller seems to have another piece by this maker, the mark is slightly different, but I've have thought it's likely to be the same potter.

Re: Graeme James
It's clearly someone with a great deal of skill - can't understand why the mark is so elusive.

Re: Graeme James
I agree the bowl and the vase are both exceptionally well made so I suspect the potter is new to the trade or foreign

Re: Graeme James
I am inclined to agree - I see the Ray Silverman look and feel but I can't find any reference of him using a different mark other than RS.
I sent Geoff Swindell pictures of the other item (the bowl) with the same mark and he admits that these pieces are not Ray Silverman.

Re: Graeme James
Yes, I'm only finding one mark for Silverman, although his mark is one of several similar ones often misattributed to other potters like Sperry and Sparrey
