Burton Stoneware

Nice chunky handthrown pottery by the Bretby Brick & Stoneware Co. Ltd., Newhall, near Burton-on-Trent,  Staffordshire.

Just being pedantic HB. Newhall is actually part of Swadlincote, in
Derbyshire, putting it alongside all the other famous South Derbyshire
potteries in the area. Coal and clay of course.

Vase (though the word may suggest something more elegant) in cream-coloured glaze. Impressed "Burton" with another letter above and below.

Quite a prolific pottery, and being fairly local, quite a lot turns up round here.
Most wares seem to be in this basic glaze as on HB's examples, but they did do
some more sophisticated items, which were pretty unashamedly copies of
wares from the Denby and Langley mill potteries.

There were copies of the desireable Denby rabbits, which they were confused
with, though coloured eyes, and a large hole underneath, were the giveaways.

Some Jardinieres and vases are almost indistingishable from Langley examples,
and for years were confused as such.

I have a factory pattern sheet I could scan and host.

I must admit, it's probably the lack of sophisticaion I like most. Another jug,  with a lighter glaze.
