Been pondering what it means? It it a joke of it's time - some event?

There must be some joke there somewhere?

Rather racy for a faring.

The joke to me is in the fact is he is not really going to bed. It's is either he is getting smacked like a child on the bottom for not going to bed or he is being smacked for pleasure as an adult in bed. I think it has a double meaning which is how it becomes naughty and a joke. Innocent and not so? Our ancestors loved these hide in plain sight rude items.

It's made in Germany so I suspect there is something lost in translation. Maybe it's meant to be 'Returning at one o'clock in the morning' and getting a hiding from the wife.
