Help! Is this Chinese or Japanese
Greetings all, I recently purchased this bottle Vase at auction simply because it was so unusual. The colours made me think it was polychrome but I cannot find info on the winged creature or its symbolism. Does anyone know anything about this character or the style of bottle Vase with four handles. It was sold as a modern eastern erotic Vase.
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi kelly. Ive moved your post to the ID section.
I don't think it is chinese or japanese. It looks more
like european faience to me, but a better base pic might help.

Agreed, looks European tin glazed pottery - Possibly French faience - but it looks too clean. Maybe new or maybe porcelain

It is quite heavy
The auctioneer thought it was a Japanese fairy (hence my incorrect title)

Re: Help! Is this Chinese or Japanese
Seen this design a few times. I always thought it looked like a Pixie having a crap hence me remembering it (sorry about the analogy). Reasonably sure it's French, the word Gien jumps into my mind so I think that's the maker. French faience, very late for that type of thing possibly 1960's. Very good for the period though as most of what they produced in the second half of the 20th century appears to be an awfully bad greatest hits collection of previous high points. But as if drawn by two year olds with no thumbs!

You see grotesques in these uncomfortable positions, plus similar design motifs and glaze colours on 16th century Italian maiolica pieces, especially from the Patanazzi workshop in Urbino. I wonder if your flask might be a modern tourist copy from thereabouts?

Reminds me of Italian Raffaellesco patterned items but the colours seem very muted on this.

Re: Help! Is this Chinese or Japanese
The most obvious source for this style of painting is Italy but a close second is France who have a long history of very similar items based on 16th century designs. I don't think it is Italian, they moved into very modern designs or very very poor versions with terrible painting as they went through the 20th century. This its almost to good for modern Italian.

Some of the motifs are similar to those on Gien pottery from France
