Re: MAJOLICA PALISSY TYPE WALL PLATES CRAB AND LOBSTER
Moved to ID, probably Portugese, but need a base pic.
Re: MAJOLICA PALISSY TYPE WALL PLATES CRAB AND LOBSTER
Colours are too bright to be originals. They look like modern copies. Need base photos to tell if they are European or Chinese

Had no idea the chinese may be making them?
Had loads over the years, and always done ok with the Portugese copies.

Yes, a lot of Chinese ones around. They used some very bright and unusual colours

Because the Palissy ones are so popular and so much more expensive

thought original was Renaissance...clearly not 500 years old.. been copied a 1000 times have they not...surely some decent maker have 'copied' them at some point?

The 'originals' that most people know are the late Victorian ones

Found ones just like these, and the four holes on the foot rim, with a stamp on the base for Caldes Da Rainka Mendes 23628 Portugal, and others marked F. Mendes, Portugal. So not Chinese, but later copies made in Portugal.

Hello
I'm a newbie so hope you don't mind me adding a photo of what the back of a late 19th/early 20th C Palissy ware plaque can look like. Its by Portugese Jose A Cunha who produced a range of sea and reptile plates amongst other things. I picked up a crab plate similar to yours a few months ago but felt it was probably late 20th century. Its just got a pale blue glazed base and impressed PORTUGAL on the back, but still a lovely piece
