large primitive lion vase
Hi
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this piece, i picked up recently .
It is 26cm tall by 16cm at widest with a weight of roughly 2kg. Any information gratefully received, as been stumped by this one.
Thanks Patrick

Re: large primitive lion vase
It doesn’t strike me as British. Difficult to say where it’s from but maybe Southern Europe or Mexico?

Re: large primitive lion vase
May be worth searching in ethnographic and folkware pottery for similar decorative styles and clay

Yes i have done a little in that direction, it reminds me somewhat of some of the Greek stylized Lion depictions. I was rather hoping that someone might recognize the mark by hey the search goes on :) Thanks for the suggestions Naomi

Re: large primitive lion vase
Patrickb - The decoration especially round the top is very uneven and worked which would lead me to think this is not by someone who does this day in / day out.

Hi You may well have a point very hard to tell within this sort of primitive style. Not quite sure what to make of it really, some days i like its boldness and others days find it a little dark and clumsy. Thanks for the comment
