Studio Pottery Top Trumps
Without appearing to be sounding too geeky - has there ever been Top Trumps based on studio potters? = if not what would be the 5 categories? and who'd we have in it?
This could spark some lively debate !!!
1 category could be influence... erm help please...
Not for the 10-15 yo market i'm thinking

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
so the top trumps universe has many hundreds of categories where a card contained statistics and ratings (usually out of 100) and these were shuffled and your opponent had half and you had half the pack - each round you took the first card from the top of your pile and picked the best statistic that you thought may beat the opponents hidded card, if you beat them you took their card from them and went again... there would be some cards that would have an unbeatable category or TOP TRUMP that could not be beaten - so you might say Bernard Leach had an Influence score of 100
e.g. for the Top Gear Top Trumps
Suggestions for Studio pottery i think could be Influence - Rarity - Cost and erm need to think 2 more up

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
It was a good way for kids to learn things as card also contained more detailed information about the item - i learned so much about dinosaurs that way

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
Think I'm on similar lines but there's a few that are gonna be pretty subjective!!
gonna throw them all into the melting pot and then eliminate from there...
So we are at so far
Influence
Recognisability
Value
Craftmanship
Rarity
Scale
Diversity (new)
Years potting (new)
Number of Entries in V&A / Museums etc (new)

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
Years Potting is a good one, Diversity is ok, not about the last one!

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
yeah but seems like on all of the potters websites they all love to point out the public collections they are in and its quite an easy one to measure and stat up but happy to put a ? by it

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
Public collections is a questionable one. The V&A's studio collecting parameters have varied widely over the years. Take for instance the 1983 CPA 25th anniversary exhibition. This was held in the V&A and the V&A bought a whole lot of items from that exhibition.
That would never happen nowadays. Its purchasing policy is skewed toward high end International Arty pieces. Very few of the present CPA members would get a look in.
The collections of the rest of the country are dominated by personal bequests. Ismay in York, Sainsbury collection in Norwich, etc etc.
Equally, value can be flavour of the month. 30 years ago Bernard Leach and Hans Coper were very roughly equal in value. Nowadays the latest Coper sale had a hammer price of £305,000 and you would probably get change out of £10,000 for the best Bernard Leach on the market.
Influence? Teaching at a high end London Ceramics course has given a lot more influence than anything else.
Do not think it will work. The very nature of studio pottery is its individuality. Ranking does not allow for that.
Equa

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
its quite a fun concept & theyve tried it with other topics of a similar nature. think it depends on which studio potters to be chosen in the 50 or whatever number chosen.... you've mentiond a good point about individuality... I'm not saying this is gonna be easy :) devilishly tricky perhaps

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
Also perhaps a couple of tongue in cheek suggestions:-
Fear Factor :) [[Think a good top trump would be claire curneen]] :)
and
Brown Factor :)
With the category Brown Factor if any of the ranked items are tied the brown factor ultimately determines who wins... i.e person with the lowest Brown Factor wins
Gosh i'm getting quite into this... time for a coffee

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
Nah..
Just do not get it.
Studio pottery is purely a personal reaction to an individuals skill or art.
To reduce that to a Kid's game just does not work for me personally.
My grandkids play a lot of this sorta game. But its much more easily defined sports and such like.
Nope.

Re: Studio Pottery Top Trumps
Could be done for studio potters, but it would be somewhat opinion based and loads would disagree with the different values
