Large Vase/Urn - can you help identify the mark?
Good evening all.
I have this weird and wonderful vase/urn (approx 12" tall and 8" diameter), which I like very much. There is a mark on the base but I am unable to find this in my copy of Yates-Owen/Fournier; so maybe this is not an British piece. Does anyone recognise this mark?
Thank you for any help you can offer.
Jack.

Hi Naomi.
I can see the 'D', or even maybe a 'C', but was not sure about the 'H' (no cross bar). However, i'll have a look to see if I can see anything similar by David Hewitt. Thank you.

Good morning Naomi.
I had a look at David Hewitt's work and whilst I can see a little similarity in some pieces, there was no eureka moment. I also noted the 'D' in his mark is very stylised, which is not the case with what seems to be a pretty crude marking on my pot.

Looks like naked pit fired raku.

That's very interesting Naomi. I have just been reading up on what is meant by 'naked Raku' and clearly it is a refined art form which takes practice (the recipe for the slip, the temperature and timing to place the pot into a sealed, smoked filled container, etc). Though I confess I didn't understand the difference between a Raku kiln and a conventional kiln.
Nonetheless...looking at my pot I can see why you suggested this process...it looks very much like a smoke infused pattern. Thank you for the suggestion.
Now...if I can just figure out who made it!

If it's upside down, it could be TD, but that probably doesn't help.

Hi all.
This is an old thread which I have yet to resolve!
I wondered whether this could be by Douglas Davies before he took up painting full time in 2000.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Jack
