Please help me with Toby Jug (no handle)
Hi there. Old Toby Jug - no handle or sign of handle. Looks painted hence chipping but seems older than 1930's? Stamped 1775 makes me think George Washington & he does bear a passing resemblance. He's definitely a statesman or barrister. Possible 1930's fake of George Washington 1775? Is 1775 a number rather than a date? I'm stumped, please help :) Siobhan.

It might be a German pattern number : 3975? They made a lot of tourist and momemorative pieces in the early 20thC. Although if it’s terracotta then it’s more likely to be British

Thank you. I will look into this. I thought it looked a bit like 3775. Siobhan.

Re: Please help me with Toby Jug (no handle)
When I see painted terracotta or plaster like this it always shouts to me of the mid to late 1930's. Its the great depression period with little money. The quality and materials used on many items was very poor. This chap looks like the clergy or a barrister. The number is probably his order number if the store wanted to buy more.
He could be a cheap import from a generic English design or UK made. He certainly was made as a novelty gift to be sold in England. Shorter and sons is possible but so are 100's of other companies that have come and gone. Many would have been made to similar designs during that period. Sorry to tell you but I doubt it's possible to find out.

There's a possibility it could be Bretby, 3775 would fit for a 1930s design,
though I don't know if they produced this sort of piece.
