Tall Jug marked O
I got a bit excited when I found this.
I was told it is English ... so which potter has a chop mark like an 'O' ... if this is an 'O'?
Well, Walter Keeler used one (when his wife Madoline decorated) ... and there are a few fairly close similarities in shape ... but not finish. And I have no idea what glaze this is ... I don't think one can get a green salt glaze - can they?
... So, maybe not him.
Then there is Gwyn Hanssen ... but most of her works seem to be whiteware!
So I am stuck folks ... can any one shed light on this delightful piece please?
Much appreciated.

Re: Tall Jug marked O
I’m not sure it’s an O, and it doesn’t match any Os I have on file. Tbh it looks more like a JT or JF monogram

There is a thread on the forum of another stoneware piece by Hwyn
There’s a thread on the forum about another stone ware piece like this by Gwyn Hansen looks like she was making stoneware in Portobello Road in the early sixties there is also a stoneware example on eBay. I hope it is by her it looks like these pieces are quite sort after 🤑ker ching.

Re: Tall Jug marked O
Thank you both for your comments. I have not found too much similarity with O'Brian's pottery ... and regarding Hanssens work, whilst there are one or two examples on google that bear some similariy ... I am now not so sure the mark is an 'o' ... as you have said NaomiM. It seems to be more like either just a 'J' or perhaps a 't' and a 'j'. Also the chop itself is a squared one with the 'lettering' inside. Believe me, I would LOVE to handle one of her pieces but we need more provenance to eradicate my doubts. I am continuing the hunt!

Re: Tall Jug marked O
... Yes I agree.
I am even wondering if there is any connection here with ... Leonard Stockley! He did some interestingly shaped jugs. I am not saying that this is his ... but perhaps there was a time when bulbous jugs were in vogue (sorry ... that sounds awful! ... but I hope you can see what I mean ... ceramic wise!)

Besides the mark not being one used by her, the clay body is not correct either. I don't know, who it is but it certainly isn't by Gwyn Hanssen Pigott. Sorry.

The shape reminds me of Jane Hamlyn’s early work

Re: Tall Jug marked O
Taking your comment of the mark perhaps being CF or JF NaomiM, I found myself looking, not at CF or JF but DF ... David Frith ... some of his work looks similar but the chop is not quite the same - his is df in a circle, whereas this mark is in a square. But I would like to hear any comments.
I've re-taken the mark with a better camera ... does that help?
