Large Wall Charger,hand painted bird & Script

Would anyone be able to identify my lovely wall charger . It has a hand painted design and script around the rim. The initials on the back look like M.W

I suspect it’s a bought in blank that’s been painted by a professional ceramics decorator rather than a potter. 1880 rather than 1980 imo

Would agree with Naomi. On seeing the two letters MW one might well think of Mary Wondrausch. But this is far too formal for her work. Now there's the rub. Beautiful professional painting, by a highly skilled artist. But there is just no individual character there, no life, no excitement apart from it being admired for its professionalism.

I've just looked at Mary Wondrausch's work, it does look as if someone has drawn on her for inspiration ! It is beautifully done , I do admire it . Thank you for your explanations

Trouble is of course, it is all fashion. In other times this would have been a much admired piece. Nowadays it is deeply out of fashion. Studio pottery is admired because it is almost done by the individual, or a small group of individuals. All the making, the decoration, the firing in the kiln. It gives a sense of individuality, and the best studio potters are collected as true artists.

Mary Wondrauch's work for instance is all done with different coloured clays in liquid form, known as slipware, It often takes several firings in the kiln, and immense flair and artistry. But she did everything herself.

Deeply out of fashion probably sums me up though; I'll carry on enjoying it !
