The inscribed figure looks like an M. Presuming it is, the most prominent wood fired salt glaze potter (and there are not many of them,at least in this country) who uses an M is Micki Schloessingk. But that of course is an impressed M.
On the other hand the salt glazing effect is not anywhere as strong as on most of her work. A less successful piece that she did not want to put her full imprimatur one? Of course All pure conjecture on what you think the actual signature reads.

Micki was my first thought too but someone, who is more familiar with her work than me, agreed with your comment, philpot.
