Not Rye. I’m seeing a JMB or JME or JMP mark - the last letter is difficult to make out .

Is there another stamp on the second bookend? A photo of it might help to see it more clearly

Thank you. It's definitely a U now you mention it, I can see it. I have been researching on a J, so that is a big help. UME means "plum" in Japanese! The mark on the second cat is no clearer - I have chosen the clearest one. I will continue to search. Thanks for everyone's help!
