Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
Hallo all...I hope you're all well.
I purchased this bowl because it piqued my interest, but to date I have discovered little about it.
Despite its bright, strong colours, it seems to have age and is heavily crazed. It also has a hairline crack. It is 23cm in diameter.
I'm aware the translation mean 'Heart forgets what the eye sees' and the the sign on the wall means 'Furniture'.
The sign above the door has 'stretched' me a little. Clearly "Marcel' is a name and 'Lille' is a place, but I have been unable to pinpoint the makers from this...assuming its referring to the maker.
Its a curious subject matter and inscription!
Has any one seen similar or are familiar with the maker?
Thank you for any help you can offer.
Jack

Certainly Faience.
I think it's "Heart forgets what the eye doesn't see".
There was Faience production in Lille, but Im not familiar with the style or "Decor".

Thank you Naomi and Denbydump.
This is interesting: I was unaware of the term Falence, but having done a quick search I can see that it was a major development of tin-glaze on earthenware. My initial search for Falence and Lille suggest the production spanned 17C - 19C.
I confess the design still baffles me! I'm uncertain what the inscription and image are meant to be saying and the wording above the door is confusing (although they look a little like R's, I think certain letters are L - reading "Marcel Bal Lille").
As for the maker...I can see no clues whatsoever!
Jack.

Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
I think the nearest (not direct) translation would be "Out of sight, out of mind" - and 'Meubles' is "Furniture". But I can't make a logical connection between the guys moving furniture and the motto!

Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
I agree Carolalev, clearly there is a narrative here, but it would seem a very personal and specific one. Is it possibly a reference to a theft?! This makes me wonder whether this was a bespoke piece...make for whoever's name is above the door.
It interesting. I'm going to photograph this again and see whether I can find any, currently invisible, markings on the base using photoshop.
Thank you for your input.

Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
Hi all.
I've tried to photograph the base of this bowl and then view it using Photoshop options. The only thing I can see may (or may not) be a mark. I think I can see some right angled white lines from the centre of the red square, one going down and then left and another going right and then down. Equally i could be just going nuts! So, to test my sanity, does anybody else see what I think is a mark in the picture below?
Thank you for your patience.

Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
I think you may be clutching at straws here. Devres faience is almost always
marked. Nevers often not I think. Ignore the "picture" and go for the border decoration,
which is not typically Desvres, this is could be the distictive giveaway.
Try "Decor lilleois"

Thank you denbydump, I suspect you're correct and I'm seeing 'ghosts'
I will look up Devres faience and Decor Lillois.

Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
Hi Denbydump...a quick follow up.
I took your advice and ignored the central design and concentrated on the border design. After looking at Devre Falence I wandered into Decor Nevers and found some examples like these below. The border patterns looks remarkably like the pattern on my plate. Is mine possibly a Nevers plate do you think?
Again, thanks for your patience.

Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
Yes, Interesting. The next step is finding the sprigs of decoration also on the rim.
Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
Probably not helpful in finding the maker of the plate, but another piece of the puzzle... googling Marcel Bal Lille Meubles found this catalogue for sale in an auction in Brussels - it looks like Marcel Bal sold antique and reproduction furniture. I can't see at first glance, but maybe there is a date on the catalogue.

Re: Interesting French Plate - does anybody recognise?
Amazing...I was just about to send an image of exactly that catalogue! Thank you carolalev.
I also noticed in my search an old advert from the dame company which dated the sale to 1923. So, it might be that finding how old the firm Marcel Bal will put the plate into a specific age range.
Thank you denbydump...I'm on the hunt for the floral trim.
