Maybe try rubbing some marmite over the base to highlight the signature

I do it all the time; It’ll wash off easily enough Some recommend using cinnamon but I find it too coarse

Tried both, the bin juice came out the winner for this piece. A little clearer, not a massive difference, but the surname (if it is that) reads as Bryan. No records of this potter, that I can find as yet.
