Edited to say I now think this is John Vasey rather than John Sneddon. Vasey made similarly decorated jugs at Griggs Forge before moving to St Agnes.

I am certain that this is by John Sneddon. I was familiar with his work when he was a member of the Guild of Ten in in the late 1970s. I was once asked to make a replacement for a soup bowl of his in this design - I politely declined.

It certainly needs more research. There aren't many Sneddon pieces online for comparison. Vasey was making pieces with this wavy decoration at Griggs Forge before St Agnes, and he had this style of St Agnes stamp with JV added to it, but it could have been that the Sneddons were using that stamp first and Vasey simply added his JV to it, but did he also copy some of their designs after they left? (see candle sticks below). The Sneddons are known to have used just a paper label &/or the Tin Mine Engine house stamp.

I was basing my identification on stylistic grounds. As an ex-potter I can see that there are clear differences between John Vaseys sweeping but neat waves and John Sneddon's scribble. Since I knew John and his work very well at that time, I can say I am 100% certain that this one is by John Sneddon. Both pairs of candle holders are by John Sneddon The designs are identical and the handles are a clear giveaway. Note that the StAgnes stamp, though partially obscured by glaze is identical the one on this jug, and clearly not the same as the one on John Vasey's vase. It's a pity that none of the pictures show the handles and attachments 'end-on' as this is often a clear diagnostic.

I have just had it confirmed by the Sneddons themselves that this is definitely Sneddon.
I know them both.

Thanks for putting this one to bed cam176, it's good to have certainty for future researchers on the forum
