Briglin Pottery

Oh nice find DD. They are sixties very well made kitchen jars. Made by the senior potters not the apprentices so quality is very high. They come in this small size (spice) and much bigger (pint size). Really an exercise in texture and pattern never seen two the same, always black white and very tactile in the hand. Alan Pett sent me a nice photo - he has a better collection than me.

Two more fine tall vases. IMO this is the stuff to collect....

Found this pair of Briglin studio-type vases today.

So not seen any of these for a lloooooonnng time. Just not out there so you could call these uncommon. On white clay, they are part of the eclectic early production before they settled on the wax resist/sgraffito combination on red earthenware technique.

bought today and containing pre-decimal money £££££

Just acquired this massive piece - 15" across and about 7.5" tall, very heavy. Not marked but typical Briglin.

Sure - here you go.

There are some similarities but it misses some typical aspects of Briglin pottery, such as the ‘button’ of clay in the middle of the base.
It might be ‘after-Briglin’. The Fuchs sisters, amongst others, continued potting after the pottery closed

I would say yes. I have a massive 380mm owl bowl that has a very similar back. It just has BRIGLIN in thick painted across the back, no stamps. But the foot is the same. Decoration looks good also, I would have said the good period = sixties, when they made more interesting things like this and were not just churning out the standard brown stuff.

Briglin elephants

Newly arrived pots - love these darker ones, guessing these are mid 60s.

Yes they are not the rarest but one of the most desirable ranges if ebay is anything to go by. The brown one on the right is more unusual being one of the batches they did so you will see it (rarely) in various sizes. Perhaps they made one kiln load? Who knows?

Briglin penguin. Has a round hole in the back, and on the base, so maybe a toothbrush holder?

Mystery? Could be right it's for toothbrush? The fatback ones are book ends - he's white clay = early

Ohh yes could be yarn or string holder of some sort?
