Sharp - Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye - Page 6 Empty Re: Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye

Post by lindylou08 November 29th 2016, 3:09 pm

Hi
May be because I live in Sussex I come across a fair amount of Rye etc or just that so much was produced over the years
This vase appears to me to have quite an old mark and I understand the J is Jim Elliott's . What I have great difficulty with is working out the chronology of all the Rye potteries and the potters that worked in them/ owned them , and when !
So I'm hoping someone can tell me the approximate age of the vase

And this is Reggie.   17 inches long

Undoubtedly Rye Pottery, presumably designed by David Sharp - I've been told it was bought in the 60s.
BUT I've been unable to find one in blue only beige and blue/ white AND there is no mark as far I can see

Any thoughts?

The RYE ENGLAND printed marks were used from around 1953 until 1970 with or without the additions of MADE IN and POTTERY. I suspect it was just what came to hand.

James (Jimmy) Elliott joined the pottery as a trainee thrower straight from school in 1952 and left to do his National Service in 1956. He didn't return to the pottery or potting after that but became an engineer.

The rhino colours do look "David Sharp" and, if so, would have been made at the David Sharp Pottery in Rye.

Agreed, David Sharp design. I've seen a few of his animals in this colour. I think one had been dated 1957

I would very much doubt animals in this muted colour being produced as early as 1957, as from 1956 to 1964 David Sharp was at the Cinque Port(s) Pottery with George Gray. The animals produced there were more highly decorated using similar "fifties" type decoration to that used at the Rye Pottery. Certainly, I would associated the blue of the rhino with the eponymous pottery started by David in 1964.

The Rye mark is 1957-71. The other mark is presumably a thrower's mark,
being impressed, but is not shown in the book.

I initially thought it was John Dennis Bullock's mark, but it's not quite right.

The thrower's marks were really for quality control purposes rather than them being a sign of an individual piece. Apprentices were allowed to do individual items that they threw and decorated but these would not be items with one of the standard range of decorative patterns such as this.

I think this pattern is Astrakhan and would have almost certainly have be applied by someone other than the thrower.

Another of these strange Hedgehog/pig like animals, that I picked up today.
I'm guessing they are fairly early?

It needed a good wash and has improved greatly with a bath (last pic)

Do you mean that blob on the base? Try leavering it off with a dinner knife; that's what I usually do. If it doesn't come off then it's probably a the remains of a stilt from the kiln and it's unlikely to come off without leaving a chip on the rim.

On that Leach pottery vid they use an angle grinder fixed to a bench to remove all the crap from the base. I think it has a wire? brush attached. But that is stoneware ... this is light earthenware.... so probably not recommended

Sharp - Rye Pottery and other Potteries of Rye - Page 6 Empty Strange little RYE Pottery lidded bowl - S impressed mark

Post by RVsaid April 13th 2018, 9:00 am

Hi

A rather odd little lidded bowl by Rye. I wondered as it is so small with a curved inner if it could be say for caviar or Roe?

Doesn't work for an egg or candle with snuffer lid with quite a high wall into the lid.
