Excellent, thank you Martyn. I can see now that the mark is tilted 45 degrees to the left, the A becomes a bit more apparent when you straighten it up.

Here's a link I just found http://www.cornishceramics.com/palanbrough.htm

Would I be right in assuming this is the same Alan Brough who was throwing for Maggi at Celtic Pottery for a while ? That link makes no mention of it.

Alan Brough, Newlyn Pottery Empty Porcelain yunomi - Alan Brough

Post by denbydump August 11th 2014, 10:03 pm

Nicely made porcelain goblet, the mark is glazed over, but is clearly AB, not BB back-to-back.

Thanks Potty, Had a look at some marks on studiopottery.com and there are a couple
the same. He used so many variations of AB in squares etc.
I'd given up on that one, as that mark is not in the book, or that he worked in porcelain,
which is what I feel it is.
cheers.

I think that he only used porcelain towards the end of his life but the decoration is really the give away.

Because of the way that the images on the site are behaving at the moment, I haven't been able to see the seal but the glaze splash "shouts" Alan Brough.

Alan Brough, Newlyn Pottery Empty Small head sculpture marked - Alan Brough

Post by Mordeep August 3rd 2015, 8:16 am

Here is another of my seemingly endless amount of pottery mysteries. Been going through the reference books and not been able to pin it down. Stands about 7 inches tall and is marked with what I think is an AB? Clues anyone?

Thanks

Looks like one of Alan Brough's marks, but I've never seen a piece like this. But there's always a first time :)

Edited to say, several have turned up in recent years, and a couple being sold at Partridges as Alan Brough, so adding to to the Ala Brough thread

Nice yunomi which the seller attributed to Alan Brough, and I've no reason not to trust him. Another hand inscribed AB mark to add to the discussion. Mark is similar to this handwritten one on a plate commissioned for the eclipse

Alan Brough, Newlyn Pottery Empty Alan Brough Bowl, AB mark

Post by benwilliams February 11th 2019, 9:56 am

5” stoneware bowl, red iron oxide glaze ( is that right.?) inside and splashes outside. Mark looks very similar to pieces I can see online. Is it his do you think?

Alan Brough, Newlyn Pottery Empty Alan Brough - Newlyn Pottery

Post by CityPotter December 11th 2020, 8:04 am

I picked these up in a charity shop this week for a couple of quid for the pair - they look much better in my cabinet, labelled up! Made after his stint at Leach, at his Newlyn studio, I think these are from his Newlyn Coffeeware set. I don't see much about him or many of his pottery examples online - any collectors out there?

His work steadily appears in auction, especially around West Cornwall. This is a link to the Saleroom auction site which lists some of his work to appear at auction.

A general request to members to use the 640 px width setting when uploading photos, so as to keep the image inside the comment box.

Alan Brough, Newlyn Pottery Empty Stoneware jug AB mark - Alan Brough

Post by abstract*toad August 18th 2021, 7:09 pm

Nice little jug, simplistic decoration on one side only.
The mark is one I've seen on other pieces, but I cannot pin it down. Possibly eb.
Any help welcomed.
