Avon Ware, Avon Art pottery, Longton (Staffs)
Recently inherited my mothers collection and this was with her Carltonware but not a piece of it. I can't read the stamp on the base as per photo's and assume it was collected around the 40-50's as this was when she was collecting Carltonware, it also has ENGLAND embosed into the base. There is also a spreader with the piece.

Avon Art pottery, Longton (Staffs).
This mark was used from 1947 onwards, so probably from the 1950s.

Thanks DD. I just googled that and their bears all seem to have 4 separate legs and their mark doesn't look the right shape to match the blurry oval on mine.
There's a small chance mine mine could be Russian if that's any help.

Whoops, got my "Wares" mixed up. It looks to be Avon ware, though I don't
recall seeing an Avon animal before,
I remember now, Melba usually used stickers on their animals.

The only one I've seen like it was on ebay - no base marks, just described as 'antique'.

Goddens is the bible of UK pottery marks.
Here is a link to an image of the mark in question.

I think you will agree it's a pretty good match.
